Introducing Canadian West Coast Sculptor - Paul McCARL
This is his story and these are some of his stone sculptures
Paul McCARL lives and carves stone in a quiet rural setting in Chilliwack, British Columbia. His home is situated in an agricultural area which is located right in the heart of the Upper Fraser Valley and overlooked by Mount Cheam, a local landmark and one which helps to provide much of the inspiration, beauty and peace that is routinely enjoyed. Paul has easy access to the nearby mountains as well the mighty Fraser River Watershed where he explores his surroundings, watches wildlife in their natural habitat and collects stones for his carving and the making of jewelry. Paul has been fully immersed in the arts for most all of his life and he fully embraces his passion for the creation and individual expression of fine art through his etchings, a birch bark picture collection and especially his exquisite stone carvings.
Most all of Paul's sculptures are representative of his close bond and understanding of nature and whether small or large, each piece that he creates is a treasure to behold. Paul collects the rough stone during his many travels throughout the mountains, lakes and streams of beautiful British Columbia. Paul forms bonds with Mother nature while he is hiking, hunting or fishing and he always returns each of the unearthed raw stones to his home where with the aid of diamond tools, he creates beautiful stone carvings. Paul enjoys the great outdoors immensely and seldom ventures alone into the wilderness. Safety is in numbers and on one recent adventure that was less than 5 miles from home he encountered a large Grizzly Bear who although at that time was sleeping in the sun and not an imminent danger. It turned out that the bear had been previously helping itself and feeding on a neighbors near harvest time crop of corn!
Walks along the nearby gravel bars of the Fraser river will frequently reward those who are observant, as through the reflection and some refraction of sunlight, the tiny agates glisten on the ground and signal a desire for greater appreciation and potential collection after having been tumbled great distances along the bed of this mighty river. Agates can be found in most every color under the rainbow but the red ones although somewhat rare to find, always remind Paul of love, friendship and the warmth of our hearts.
Let me take a moment to put these tiny gems away and then we can take some time to walk hand in hand as we explore this website and learn more about Paul and his Carvings. Welcome!
